Introduction
Request a quote
A request for a quote for an electroless nickel plating treatment is not a mere administrative step, but an important technical phase that directly affects feasibility, cost, result quality, and process repeatability.
An incomplete or unclear request can lead to delays, subsequent revisions, or quotations that do not match the actual application requirements. Conversely, a well-structured request makes it possible to correctly assess the most suitable treatment and provide a consistent offer from the very first contact.
Request for a quote: two typical cases
The information to be provided largely depends on the project’s stage of development. In general, two main situations can be identified.
For designers
In the case of new projects, prototypes, or applications still being defined, the request for a quote is often accompanied by technical questions about the most suitable treatment.
At this stage, technical support is useful to:
- select the most suitable coating type (mid-phosphorus, high-phosphorus, composite);
- define the correct thickness based on performance and tolerances;
- assess the need for post-plating heat treatments;
- prevent critical issues related to the base material, geometry, or operating conditions.
In these cases, the request for a quote can also be used as a tool for technical alignment before the final drawing specification is defined.
For machining shops
When the manufacturing drawing is already defined, as is typically the case for machining shops, the request for a quote is used to verify the feasibility of the treatment and to obtain an economic quotation.
In this case, it is essential that all relevant information is already clearly stated in the drawing or in the attached technical documentation, to avoid interpretations or subsequent requests for clarification.
Information required for a complete request
To prepare a correct and comparable offer, some key technical information is required.
Part drawing
The technical drawing is the primary reference and should include:
- base material, specifying the alloy;
- any heat or thermochemical treatments already performed;
- functional dimensions and critical tolerances;
- surfaces to be treated and any surfaces to be excluded.
Electroless nickel plating specifications
It is important to clearly indicate:
- required coating type (e.g. NIPLATE® 500, NIPLATE® 600, composites);
- required coating thickness, stated as a thickness range;
- any post-deposition heat treatment (de-embrittlement, hardening);
- applicable standards (e.g. ISO 4527), if relevant.
Additional information
Depending on the application, the following may also be relevant:
- processing method (static or barrel);
- specific instructions for handling and racking;
- customer specifications or CSRs, especially for automotive applications;
- packaging requirements.
Batches and volumes
For proper economic and organizational evaluation, please indicate:
- delivery batch (number of parts per shipment);
- expected annual volume or estimated quantities.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR AN EFFECTIVE REQUEST
- Always provide the most up-to-date drawing and the technical specifications referenced in it.
- Avoid generic indications such as “standard electroless nickel plating”: always specify coating type and thickness.
- If the project is at a preliminary stage, state this explicitly: it allows for a more targeted technical assessment.
A clear request reduces response times and improves the quality of the offer you receive.
